Wandering Garden - Gijs Van Vaerenbergh
For the 600th anniversary of KU Leuven, a wandering garden was created in the Arenberg Castle Park — a contemporary folly that invites visitors into an immersive, living structure. Inspired both by classical garden pavilions and mythological mazes, the installation is formed by a series of gently curving walls that gradually become overgrown with a rich mix of climbing plants.
As you move through it, the space shifts: at times the walls lean in and narrow the path, elsewhere they open up and reveal pockets of light and air. This changing rhythm turns the garden into a quiet, exploratory landscape — part botanical collection, part playful maze — where visitors are encouraged to slow down, wander, and let the surroundings unfold step by step.
